Original Tucher Nürnberger Rotbier (Red Beer)

The origins of bottom-fermented beer

Nuremberg has always set benchmarks when brewing beer. In terms of quality this was true long before the Bavarian purity law. Even so long ago as 1303, the ‘Nuremberg Barley Order’ ensured that only those ingredients were put into beer - a foodstuff - that were supposed to be in it. Therefore, it is not surprising that the Nuremberg Rotbier, the first German quality beer, originated in the imperial city, and is considered the origin of bottom fermented beers in Germany.

Our Original Tucher Nürnberger Rotbier reflects Nuremberg’s art of brewing. It is brewed according to a unique recipe: Using four types of malt, we start by brewing a Vollbier (‘full beer’) and a Starkbier (‘strong beer’) to produce the Rotbier. The strong beer is stored in oak barrels for a refined maturing process. After the storage period our master brewers – relying solely on their senses – decide if and especially which barrel-aged strong beer is a fitting match for the full beer. The result is a well-balanced, yet powerful and vibrant red beer with a character of its own.
